Samhain - Spirals - Tree of life
On the shortest day and the longest night, with the Sun rising and setting at it’s most southerly point and it’s power at it’s lowest ebb, Winter Solstice (December 21 - 22), celebrations and rituals marked the return of the lost Sun to the northern hemisphere and it’s victor over the darkness of winter. Linked to the druids, the Tree of Life is a symbol that represented male and female and their unity. It has connections with both apple trees and the rowan tree, of Salmon of Knowledge fame. It was believed to stave off hunger, and symbolises life force.
